Tanzania climate – What is Tanzania’s climate?

By: Jason Steller

Knowing what the Tanzania climate is like is an important thing to think about when planning a trip to Tanzania. Since Tanzania is located near the equator it does not have the same type of seasons as locations farther away from the equator have. For the most part, the climate is the same throughout the year mostly being hot, but there are wet and dry seasons. Typically the interior plateau areas are more dry and the coastal areas have higher humidity.

The Tanzania climate has different wet seasons depending on the area. For example, the northern parts of Tanzania have two different wet seasons. The longer wet season in the north lasts from March to May while the shorter wet season is from November to December. Other parts of Tanzania have just one wet season that spans from November to May.

The January to February dry season in the north tends to be the best time to visit Tanzania if you the Tanzania climate is an important factor in planning when to go for you. This dry season is typically when climate wise the north, where most of the safari locations in Tanzania are located, is most enjoyable. This dry season is also when the wildlife in the Serengeti give birth and predators, such as lions, are more active. Thus the dry season is not only more enjoyable due to not have to deal with bad wet road conditions as often, but it is also good to visit during due to the wildlife spotting being better.

If you plan to visit Dar es Salaam besides just passing through on your way to a safari up north, you might be interested in knowing that the Tanzania climate in this city ranges from highs in the mid-60s Farenheit and high 80s Farenheit.

Another commonly visited destination that you might want to know the typical climate for is Zanzibar. The island of Zanzibar tends to a warm temperature climate throughout the year. The warm weather in Zanzibar is made more enjoyable by the cool sea breezes that can be felt around the island most of the year, especially when you are right on the coast. However, Zanzibar does have a rainy season from April to May that is good to avoid visiting during because many of the beach activities people visit Zanzibar to experience are not very enjoyable during the wet season.
