Teeth Care Dos and Don'ts

By: Slogn Roay

While your friendly dentist can give you a perfect smile by fixing, filling, whitening or even replacing your pearly whites, you still have huge tasks at hand. Making sure that you floss and brush your teeth regularly, mind the food and medicine you ingest and most especially not chewing on hard things are some of the advice experts give. An expert in periodontics noted that the wrong habits of chewing on pencils, paper clips and the like will cause bad things to your dental health. The person that habitually puts objects in his mouth tend to put it on the exact position every time he does so.This causes damage not only on the teeth but the gum line as well since it causes the teeth to pull away from the gums.

One surprise is in acidic food such as the citrus fruit. Even though many believe that drinking plenty of citrus drinks can boost the health, it may still cause unseen harm on both the gums and the teeth as well. Make sure to never let your mouth dry up while you are on medication. Certain drugs like antidepressants, antihistamines, medicines for blood pressure, muscle relaxation and tranquilizer can reduce the level of saliva, which are natural cleansers of teeth and gums.

He also reminds those who are on drugs that cause the saliva to dry up to never forget to thoroughly rinse their mouths right after brushing their teeth or even just eating. Sip water throughout the day, or stimulate the saliva flow by chewing paraffin or sugarless gum. Some people can consult their dentists for help through artificial saliva.

One of the reasons you might not brush when you should is because you're away from home. Rinsing the mouth vigorously after meals eaten out is a good alternative when there is no tooth brush and toothpaste. Water is a wise choice in swishing vigorously and eliminate all the bits of food in between the teeth. During brushing, it's important to have a brush with tender bristles and doing it in a circular manner. With improper brushing techniques and the use of a tough bristled brush, the tooth can be damaged as it causes corrosion of the gums.

The associate professor shares that a string of dental floss is the weapon in preventing tooth decay from occurring. Floss can finish the work that the toothbrush is unable to finish, like cleaning the spaces under the gum line or in between teeth. As long as the flossing technique used is right, using the right kind of floss would not be an issue. Make sure that the floss rubs all the sides of your teeth and then let it reach the area of the gums and continue rubbing gently as the gums resist.

People who start using floss may experience some bleeding of the gums at first, but it's nothing to be alarmed about, the professor says. As you keep on brushing, the bleeding will stop at about two weeks time and your gum health will improve. Children and adults alike must use dental floss especially when the permanent teeth have already grown out. For periodontal problems that start early and worsen with time to be avoided, children are encouraged to start using dental floss at an early age.
