The Benefits of a Full Sized Wheelchair Van

By: Norman Kirby

Why choose large over small?
Statistics show that 9 out of 10 buyers choose small vans with ramps for wheelchair drivers or passengers. This is because of the low maintenance cost in terms of gas. However, despite the steep price, a full sized wheelchair van has several benefits that outmatch mini vans.
The first aspect is load capacity and length of travel. Full sized vans are suitable for a wheelchair passenger or driver that spends a large amount of time on the road. If the backload is to exceed 1100 pounds, a full sized van is recommended. Because of its size, large vans are also stable and more comfortable to drivers.
Next, a large wheelchair van has, of course, a large passenger capacity. This is recommended for a wheelchair user with a large family. For public purposes, a large vehicle is suitable for multiple passengers who use wheelchairs. Instead of ramps, a full size handicap van can be equipped with efficient lifts for loading and unloading passengers.
Modification of a van
If you already have a large van and you want to make it suitable for handicapped drivers or passengers, you can have modifications installed. Basically, control modifications allow wheelchair users to use all the driving functions just with their hands.
A big wheelchair van can also be adjusted in terms of floor and roof height. If the floor and ceiling can be adjusted about 10 inches each, it will be a lot more spacious inside. This is particularly comfortable for the driver, since a larger headspace is provided. A mini van seems too cramped for a driver with a seating height of 55 inches. Besides that, most mini vans are not feasible for floor or roof modifications.
You can also choose from the different setups for wheelchair ramps or lifts. Foldable ramps are recommended for mini vans. As for large vans or buses, a mechanical wheelchair lift is feasible for installation. The setups include side entry and rear entry. Side entry lifts are popular since they are compatible with most vehicles but they require at least 6 feet of clearance. If competition for parallel parking space is tight, you can choose a rear entry lift for your wheelchair van.
Choosing a dealer or modification service
It will help to research about a dealer or service before purchasing. Collect second opinion from friends and previous buyers. If you the mode of purchase is online, it is advised to look for reviews in the internet. Some companies can be too good to be true because of their offers. But, what do the reviews say about them?
Another important thing is to know if the dealer is a member of the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association or NMEDA. This is an association of vehicle experts particularly for the needs of the handicapped. They conduct ADA or tests for safety and effectiveness of vehicular modifications. They particularly focus on the modifications that allow wheelchair users to drive safely. NMEDA membership guarantees peace of mind in buying a brand new or a used wheelchair van.
