The Endless Search for a Cure on Gum Disease

By: lauran Starr

This dentist exerts extra effort in figuring out a cure for a disease which would be eliminated if people would take good care of their teeth. The dentist says that 28 million people in the United States suffer from advanced periodontitis or gum disease. At a very early stage, a lot of people would lose their once healthy teeth because of this gum disease. Although the disease is not lethal, according to the director of the University of Washington's center for research in oral biology, it affects almost everybody to varying degrees and add up to the $5 billion spent by Americans annually on dental care.

Research in electrical engineering and biochemistry as well as medicine and dentistry studies include the interdisciplinary fight against gum disease. On the other hand, the best preventive measures still depends on how a person takes good care of her teeth by regular flossing and brushing. A connective tissue called collagen is held by the teeth in the bone. Losing teeth is one major cause of having plaque simply because collagen was disturbed.

Plaque brings in a lot of damage for it consists of 99 percent microorganisms or bugs. Inflammation is induced in the gums and in the supporting structure beneath. These bacteria will consume every bit of the teeth's surface and soon, it will cause destruction if proper flossing and brushing of the teeth is not practiced. But because a lot of people won't brush their teeth, the public's need for a cure increases and the research for it continues. Recently, news from Europe indicated that plaque can be prevented by killing bacteria through the use of mouthwash.

Bactericide chlorohexidine was used by the British Army to sterilize surgical equipment during the World War II, said the dentist. It was actually applied as a mouthwash by a Danish scientist which seemed to have worked but still with a few disadvantages. Although this news sounded exciting, it was terrible because after moments of applying this drug, it stains the teeth black. He said that as a temporary result, one will not be able to have a sense of taste.

Other than the effects mentioned earlier, a more serious problem would be the potential of inducing cancer. Quite a breaking news because drugs with the same structure as this has been safe for humans and animals for a long period of time. To worsen things, another problem is present. It can cleanse your mouth too much.

Suppose you could sterilize your mouth, kill all the bugs. In reality, our entire gastrointestinal tract contains bugs. They are important to the metabolism of the human system, they aid in digestion, and they make Vitamin K.

Would a drug that selectively kills plaque from forming bacteria be helpful or not? I will bet my dollar on bacteria outwitting drugs. When it comes to dental care, most people become irresponsible. Brushing definitely works if they do it. If they will just do it, the disease is definitely curable. But I don't think you'll get much of the public to do it.
