The Gift of Hearing

By: Rubyney Dennis

When it comes to electronic aids, a number of them were just introduced to assist the hearing impaired. For the subject of hearing impairment, four assemblies were arranged and this was fourth out of the four. The various devices range from inexpensive and easily installed units which plug into a home's electrical outlets to activate lights when the doorbell or telephone rings to a Telecommunication Device for the Deaf (TDD) which costs several hundred dollars and requires special installation.

With the TDD, the deaf can easily exchange messages with anybody by using a keyboard and telephone. This is a device that only works with a similar one, so for those with units at home, having access to emergency aid is no longer a problem because emergency facilities are now getting their own TDD units.

Since their birth, most of the deaf already had no sense of hearing, by being deaf one had zero hearing abilities. For the hearing impaired, they can recognize some sounds although their hearing is not as sharp. While many of the less expensive and simpler devices are useful to the deaf like the doorbell or telephone devices, many of the others which he demonstrated only increase the volume for the hearing impaired.

Should you enter into the proximity of emergency vehicles, there is a device that will alert you. Currently, a majority of emergency vehicles already come with transmitters strong enough to accommodate signals up to 1800 feet. Within the proximity of emergency vehicles, the receiver will start to alert the motorist by causing a light on the dashboard to flash. Even people with normal hearing can benefit from this machine when they fail to hear sirens due to the air conditioning or a loud radio.

These transmitters are being offered to emergency units free of charge in the manufacturer's hope that this will promote sales of the receivers in private cars. Because of the $4 rebate for each sale made, the manufacturers are cashing in with the continued use of their product. There was a car maker who wanted a certain quantity of emergency vehicles to come equipped with transmitters, if his number is reached, he will make receivers standard features in every car he makes. The offer included a privilege of being the exclusive party to do the transmitter installations.

Probably the best one yet was the wrist pager that looked like a watch. Using base stations in the form of a phone, doorbell, or call box, it vibrates to call the attention of the wearer. There are four lights on the unit to indicate which of the base stations is calling.

To improve the quality of sounds for the hearing impaired, there were devices such as a set of headphones with a little box serving as the volume control. When one who is hearing impaired needs to increase the volume on his headsets while watching TV, a device can be connected to the set making this possible, only the volume on the headsets is increased.

As he grew more interested in hearing problems because of some clients who were suffering from hearing loss, one bookstore owner started to study and gain all the knowledge he could with regard to hearing impediments. He gives demonstrations to various groups about the products available to help them and has acquired many of them for these presentations. Explaining the devices meant displaying instructions on a wired up board. Profiting is not his agenda, he does not sell any of the products he presents, and he tells people where to buy them.

Experience is the only way to completely understand how it is to have impaired hearing. For one who is still adjusting to a loss of hearing the problems happen when you wake up in the morning, do not expect to hear the weather report, there is also no chance of finding out if your car needs a tune up, you may not even wake up in the first place because you cannot hear the alarm clock.
