The Many People Who are Facing Hearing Problems

By: Stephen Brewer

From the 16 million Americans who have problems with their hearing there are 12 million who do not get treatment and this only proves the lack of attention people are currently attributing to their ears. Provided are examples of common ear problems today. In order for the ear canal to have protection there is ear wax. People may have glands that make more ear wax than what is hygienic and this can easily lead to a problem with hearing loss. It is not a good idea to poke around your ear so get a doctor to clean it.

Then there is swimmer's ear. As a mild condition, this is medically termed as external otitis. This results from swimming in overcrowded pools or those with too much chlorine and then failing to dry the ears well enough. Some antibiotics might be necessary of a condition is no longer mild enough for it to go away in time.

Eardrums that are perforated are not good as well. Serving the purpose of transmitting sound waves from the ear canal to the middle ear is the eardrum. It is a lot closer to the ear opening than most people think, and it can be perforated by sticking things into the ear, by a blow on the side of the head or as a result of infection. Large perforations will need surgery but smaller ones may heal themselves. In line with a loss of hearing, other possible effects include dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.

For ear infections, regular customers are the children. Middle ear infections or otitis media are the trend for children. Before reaching two years old, 50 percent of American children contract this infection. These conditions can be chronic or acute and usually follow an infection of the nose or throat or occur as a complication of other illnesses such as mumps, measles or flu. Fever and severe earache are the symptoms of acute otitis media. To treat this, antibiotics are enough. Hearing loss can come from chronic otitis media. Treatment involves draining the ear and antibiotics.

Another hereditary disease is Otosclerosis wherein there is some bone growth in the middle ear. From the tiny middle ear bones, the stapes is affected by this bone growth causing hearing loss by impeding sound movement. Reaching this point leads to surgery as treatment. Possible nerve damage is associated with this affecting the inner ear. When it comes to treatment, little can be done here. Frequently affecting women, this is a condition that manifests around the ages of 16 and 40. Symptoms include a slight loss of hearing then tinnitus or a ringing in the ears.

Some hissing, roaring, or whining sounds may be heard when there is tinnitus known as the ringing in the ears. Some people are put out of action because of this, around seven million from 37 million Americans. Clearing the ears from excessive wax is necessary to treat the mildest cases for this ailment. More severe cases can occur as a result of problems in the middle ear, perforation of the eardrum or the accumulation of fluid behind the drum.

Other than Otosclerosis, the following namely diabetes, thyroid malfunctions, anemia, low blood pressure, allergies, infections, equilibrium, middle ear injuries, and even arthritis can bring about some of the noises. To treat it, you need to look for the exact location of the problem. Much gravity is when tinnitus hits the inner ear. Considering how far it is, diagnosis may become difficult. When this manifests, the causes usually include the following namely fluid accumulation in the inner ear due to allergy attacks, tumors pressing on nerves from the cochlea to the brain, cochlear or hearing center as well as circulatory problems, and infections.

The manifestation of Meniere's Disease happens later on in life. Equilibrium is affected by this especially when inner ear disturbances occur due to stress, infections, allergies, drugs, and diseases. There is mild deafness in an ear. From vomiting to nausea, these commonly occur with this syndrome including vertigo or a loss of balance. Going about this problem can be through surgery, the proper diet, and drugs.
