The Micro SD Memory Card - Great Things do come in Small Packages

By: Norman Kirby

Remember a couple of years ago when the hard disks in your computer has a capacity of just 2GB, and that's the high end models. Now you have the same amount of storage space inside your cell phone! In a device no bigger than your fingernail you can now store thousands of megabytes worth of files, this device is the Micro SD memory card.
The Micro SD card is a type of SD or Secure Digital cards. These are removable flash memory cards. The Micro SD is the preferred storage media of most portable electronic devices like cell phones, multimedia players, portable video games, and digital cameras. These can be used to store data or even transfer files from one device to another.
These cards are quite small in size, smaller than a nickel, hence the name Micro SD. The actual size of the card is 15mm by 11mm by 1mm thick. When compared to regular SD cards, the Micro SD memory card is only about a quarter the size. These cards can also be used in devices that only have slots for regular SD cards by using a mechanical adapter, thus the Micro SD card can be used in place of regular SD cards, even a Sony Memory Stick Duo or a Transflash memory card.
Micro SD cards are miniscule because they are intended for use in modern ultra small cellphones and portable electronics that do not have much space available for full sized SD cards. Even though it is small, there are Micro SD cards that have a huge amount of storage space, sometimes reaching up to 4GB.
When the Micro SD was first launched in 2006, the prices were pretty steep. But as the technology evolved and the demand and popularity of the small memory card increased they became cheaper. Modern Micro SD memory cards now cost a tenth of their initial price. Not only did their price drop, the capacity of Micro SD cards grew exponentially. The first cards only had 32MB or 64MB capacities, now it's not uncommon to see 2GB Micro SD cards bundled in electronic devices these days.
Micro SD should not be confused with its higher capacity counterpart, the Micro SDHC. These cards have massive amounts of storage space, ranging from 4GB to a staggering 32GB. If you think that this is already huge just wait for the new SDXC format to be implemented in Micro SD cards. With this new format, the miniscule cards will be able reach an insane 2TB storage capacity. This evolution in removable storage is mainly influenced by the higher storage demands of modern electronic devices like smartphones that are able to play and record high-definition videos.
The fast-paced evolution of removable storage does not seem to slow down. As the higher demands for increased storage by mobile devices increase, manufacturers will try and do their best just to keep up. Don't be surprised if one day you'll be able to save your whole dvd movie library right in the palm of your hand.
