The Parts of a Boat

It is quite amazing how a watercraft floats onto the water with its heavy weight not to mention its content. To let us understand how this things floats on the water we need to check on the parts and the materials that are used to make the boat.

The Hull
The internal network of frame that extends from both sides is called the hull. It is the longitudinal length of the watercraft, and then covered by a plate on its outer shell which is usually made from steel, aluminum or fiberglass.

The Keel
The hull is built with a keel. It is from the middle of the ship from the bow to its stern which is the foundation of the ship. It is where the major strength of the hull is focused. It helps the ship to get the balance needed to float.

The Bow, Gunwale and the Deck
The curves of the boat are important. The bow allows the craft to be lifted by the waves, instead of cutting into the waves. The sheer is the curve on the deck from stem to stern. The flare along with the tumblehome determines the buoyancy and the displacement of the ship. The flare is the outward turn once the hull from the waterline comes up. The tumblehome is the opposite of flare. It is from the gunwale, the upper edge on the side of the boat to the waterline. The gunwale is where the hull and the deck meet. The curve on the deck allows the water to flow off the deck.

Chine
The speed of the ship and how it is being handled depends entirely on the chin. It is the part below the waterline. A soft chine is rounded while a hard chine has a square shape. The chine has a sharp angle in the hull that allows the ship to move easily

The Stern
The stern is usually higher compared to the bow. A flat stern has a broad surface for waves to act upon. Round stern are safer in traveling as the waves on the stern spilt and travels forward on the sides of the ship. It is indicated with a white light for navigation at night.

The Propeller
The propeller is the fan that transmits power through the constant rotational motion. The difference is produced between the forward the rear surface of the blade. Marine propellers are made up of helicoidal surface that acts at the same time to screw the water. With the constant motion of the propeller, it allows the ship to operate at a constant speed.

The materials generally used to make modern ships range from wood to fiber glass. Simple boats that can accommodate 3 to 5 person can be made from wood with a simple outboard engine. Industrial ships are usually made from steel and aluminum for maximum lifespan. Fiberglass is also used in making ships but the life of these ships is short since extreme heat can easily destroy it.
