They Want Medical Services to Be Improved

By: Irina Reed

Being in the medical profession has always held attraction for young people of high ideals. However, these days, the medical programs are full of students who represent a new generation of physicians, who would rather have jobs helping the under-served population than have a lot of money and physical belongings.

One instance of this new breed of doctor can be seen in the 28 year old male doctor who had received offers from private organizations, drug and insurance companies and medical schools in the amount of $30,000 and more, but decided to reject them. He founded an organization while in medical school and prefers to continue with that organization, earning only $12,000 annually. He's just one example of the new breed of physician less interested in financial rewards andmore focused on delivering quality medical care in America.

He is moving away from the traditions that surround the medical profession. The purpose of his government funded institute is to analyze the educational, medical, dental, and legal needs of specific communities, and his institute has been doing this since it's inception four years ago. He says that the needs of the entire community must be taken into consideration in order to accurately evaluate health care problems. Being able to be creative, the students find it difficult to find ways available to offer these different services and ideas.

The condition of health care in this nation is in dire straits. Medical programs are trying to address these issues, but they are going to need a push. The medical students themselves are pushing the issues and many of the medical schools across the country have begun responding to their demands. The majority of the medical students are now aware of these problems and want to work towards fixing them.

Medical school administrators report that their students feel a growing sense of responsibility for the crisis in medical care in this country and this greater sense of social awareness is the motivation behind their decision to become doctors. One dean reports that he has never seen so many, and they are almost too serious. Achieving his purpose will be more of a cause for the new generation and they will tend to spend more of their energy and time committed to just causes. He is in search of a different lifestyle, different objectives and different values. And he doesn't want to be trapped by the social conventions of his predecessors.

Past generations of physicians have been especially concerned with socio-economic success. Their interests revolved around material possessions, financial security, success and having the respect of all people around them. Current students are beyond comprehension should your beliefs and standards be from an earlier generation's opinions.

Our nation is going into a new era for community medicine in which students are more worried about the way medical care is provided to every part of society, which is founded on need instead of finances. One forerunner associate professor in the efforts to revolutionize the medical schools has proclaimed that America spends billions of dollars for its medical care, but the services and workers provided will most likely not improve for a while. In reality, they could be much worse off should changes not be forthcoming.

A certain association has been established mainly for the goal of steering med students to go into medical fields that target public health, environmental health, and preventive medicine. This association subsidizes medical endeavors that are pushed by the community all across America. It is occupied full time with achieving the integration of community health projects into the curricula of the medical schools.

Learning community medicine has increased in popularity with these new young doctors and many have indicated a desire to return to those types of work that they were exposed to while still in medical school. Medical specialties including community health, and medical practice for minority groups by minority group doctors, are expected to increase.
