Tips for buying a used car, not normally thought of.

By: Happy Hippo

I am always trying to improve the used car buying process. I cover a lot of advice like test driving a car, how to inspect and view a car and things you should ask the dealer or seller. Let’s go beyond that brilliant advice and look at some other tips people might not think of before buying a used car. Just like in horror stories, things that go bump rarely have a happy ending.
1. If you bump any part of your body getting into a used car, (including things like your head, shoulders or hips) don’t buy it. You’re going to do it again and again and wonder why you bought the car.
2. Leave your glasses in your pocket when taking a test drive of a used car. You know you’re going to forget them at some point. See if you can work the controls without your glasses?
3. You never bring the children when testing a used car because they distract your attention. However, you do need to know your child’s kick distance between their booster seat and the back of your seat. Otherwise, get used to the kick, kick, kick.
4. Does your mobile phone have a holder or safe place to put it? Keep in mind it should be some place where you can charge it and the phone stays put in the same place during a sudden stop. Otherwise your mobile phone turns into a flying object and could injure you or others in the car.
5. Does it have somewhere to keep your drink if going on a long journey?
6. Google the name of the private seller. See if there is any unusual behavior involving his or her use of a car in the past. It’s common advice that you should always walk away if a deal sounds too good to be true. Do the same if the deal is too bad to be true. Somebody’s just trying to rip you off because he or she perceives ignorance on your part. Picture yourself driving this car. Does it make you smile or cringe? Don’t buy it just because it makes you smile, but don’t buy it if it makes you cringe. Don’t be ashamed of your car.
7. Set the driver’s seat where you like it. Hop in the backseat and see if there is much legroom. This is important if you carry other adults. But if your world revolves around you, don’t worry about passenger comfort.
8. Are you a hoarder? Where are you going to put all your stuff? Don’t bring your crap with you, but imagine where your gym bag is going to live, and if the passenger foot well can hold lots of fast food bags, if there is room for the kids’ coloring books, Nintendo DS and other stuff that seems to live in your car.
Bonus
Here’s a bonus tip - never buy a used car where your mechanic finds grass during the pre- inspection. Grass usually means its been driven through the fields.
Im off to look at used cars for sale in Galway for a friend of mine lets hope I remember all my own advise.
