Okay, so this opinion may not be probably the most popular. But please, do not crucify me. I'm a great dad. I acquired my children all the toys my wife discovered to assist the children’ "development." You know, academic toys. And consider me, I am glad my children have things like mini computers that educate spelling and math, crystal-growing science mission kits, memory games, puzzle cubes and problem-fixing laptop CD-ROMs. However I typically surprise, when I see these toys strewn all around the lounge ground, abandoned and uncared for while Katie and little Mitch are sticking balls of Foolish Putty of their ears, maybe children should have some toys only for fun and nothing else?

In any case, once I was a kid we didn't have all this stuff. We had little red wagons and toy cowboy pistols. We had Lincoln Logs, Matchbox automobiles, building blocks and our imaginations. I can remember a summer after I was 6 when my solely new toy was a stick my dad helped me flip right into a fishing pole. And that saved me busy seven days a week!

I'll inform you this much. I would reasonably see my children play with a toy that they get pleasure from, that evokes them to run around and have enjoyable and discover the world than some "academic" toy that they are going to sit round enjoying with for just a few hours till they tire of it and never contact it again.

My kids’ friends come over to play and I can’t help however notice that lots of them are pretty chubby. And they come from good families, not the kind the place the parents are feeding them Twinkies and plopping them in front of the TV for hours at a time. But a whole lot of these children are coming over and taking part in with our “academic” pc math games, and simply sitting on their butts!

That is what I’d prefer to see. I’d like folks to let go of this idea that a toy needs to be clearly “instructional” for it to be worthwhile. I’d like people to contemplate different components, like if the toy will get our children moving around and playing actively, or if it can flip them into little sofa potatoes. I’d like people to consider whether their youngsters will really benefit from the toy, or whether it should sit untouched.

Let’s put away all these foolish ideas about what’s proper for our kids and simply them be kids and have fun the old school way.
