They see it as the adventure in Antarctica being lost with the coming of tourists. The travel service will provide a red parka, kodachrome, mittens, and warm pants but things like drinks, tips, laundry, and seasick pills are bought personally.

Occupying Antarctica since 1955 are American scientists and US Navy personnel. Nine scientific stations are also located here and on adjacent islands and they are maintained by other nations. What is the viewpoint of the Navy with regard to tourists? It was mentioned by the commander of naval forces in Antarctica that having no territorial claim meant that no one can prohibit any visitors from coming here. However, they have power when it comes to visiting their stations.

Wandering around the base here, tourists can see Antarctica's first nuclear power reactor, visit the ship's store or post exchange, attend services at the Chapel of the Snows, or have a few drinks at a number of enlisted men's clubs and an officers' club. From the group are people who are either conservationists, hikers, or avid bird watchers, and the most interesting activities for them include trips to penguin rookeries, searching for seals, skua gulls, and killer whales and also visits to the huts left by the early explorers.
