Understanding What Good Dental Health Means to You

The teeth you have now are the ones that will last you till the day you die; that is, if you properly treat them. When the natural bacteria in your mouth unites with the saliva and debris left by food in your mouth, the result is the natural development of plaque. By eating or drinking foods that are starchy or sugary, you cause the bacteria to produce an acid that attacks the protective coating on your teeth, also known as enamel.

Plaque causes enamel to erode and constant exposure will lead to cavities and other dental problems. In addition, an accumulation of plaque may result in periodontal disease. Tartar occurs when teeth are not properly brushed or flossed and plaque is allowed to harden. Tartar is very hard and collects at the gum line. The first stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis, and can be caused by swollen gums from tartar buildup.

Gingivitis is the first step on the path to periodontitis. Periodontitis is the term used to describe the condition in which openings or pouches form where the gum meets the teeth. This is due to the gums detach or separate from the teeth. These pouches then grow infected. If periodontitis goes untreated, the jaw, gums, and surrounding tissue will deteriorate and cause the teeth to loosen.

You need not only regular professional attention, but good teeth-cleaning habits at home to help keep plaque under control. The correct method for brushing your teeth is to keep your brush at a small angle, press against teeth and apply a side to side action. Brush teeth for a minimum of two minutes, cleaning the inside, outside, chewing surfaces and brushing the tongue. By brushing your tongue, you will rid yourself of bacteria that causes bad breath. A good brushing twice a day is acceptable, but dentists recommend brushing after every meal.

Brush with a soft-bristle toothbrush is advised by expertise. Your toothbrush should be replaced every three months or so, but you may want to do it sooner if the bristles are showing excessive wear. A lot of people believe the key to good dental health is an electric toothbrush. However the only way to effectively remove all the plaque at the gum line and between teeth is to brush regularly and also to floss daily or use an interdental brush or other device designed to reach small spaces.

Each time sugary drinks or sweets are ingested, your teeth are exposed to harmful acids which in turn can encourage cavities. However, there are a various food choices you can make to help stave off decay. One option is to eat some aged cheese right after the other foods, as it can neutralize the acid that is damaging the enamel.

Apples, pears and other crunchy fruits water down sugars in food. These fruits are high in water and this provokes saliva. Saliva rinses away food pieces. Chewing sugarless gum promotes saliva production, which helps 'wash away' cavity-producing bacteria. You can help maintain the health of your teeth by eating calcium-rich foods like yogurt, leafy-green vegetables, and milk, as well as daily calcium supplements. Fluoride also helps prevent tooth decay.

Find out if your water supply includes fluoride. If it does not a fluoride solution may be necessary. Keep your teeth healthy by scheduling dental visits twice a year. And if any area of your mouth is sore, you notice a change in bite, or you experience bleeding gums, see your dentist in between regular checkups as well. Robust teeth can last a lifetime when you take care of them and visit the dentist frequently.
