Understanding the kinds of hearing treatments

By: Burt Cunningham

A lot of people take their sense of hearing for granted believing that it will never go away. People as they grow old, will slowly lose their sense of hearing bit by bit. It is important then to look at the causes and reasons behind this loss of hearing and more importantly the available hearing treatment that can be used for it.

Aside from other abnormalities, babies are more at risk of getting hearing loss than anything else. Both children and adults of all ages can get hearing disorders. There are also a lot of causes to hearing loss such as genetics, medication, trauma, illnesses and so forth.

A person who is subjected to loud environmental noises day in and day out is likely to lose their sense of hearing. Airports, concerts, crowds or anything else for that matter can lead people to lose their sense of hearing. On a smaller scale, using power tools like drills and cutters and not wearing protective hearing equipment can also cause damage.

There are a variety of methods to treat or adapt to hearing impairment and the use of hearing aids is one of these. Determining what type of hearing aid may be a little complicated as there are many different types available. Hearing aids in general will still just collect and amplify sound to a user.

The hearing aid's type is determined only by where the tiny electro acoustic device is worn. A BTE or behind the ear aids is a device made up of a case, tube and ear mold. The BTE is often prescribed by doctors because of its practicality, being a device worn outside the ear, free from damage caused by moisture and earwax.

A person can go for what is called a bionic ear which is basically an implant that replaces your cochlea. The device is implanted surgically underneath the scalp and right behind the hearing impaired ear. The implant is made to act like your own cochlea as it does the same things as collects sounds, converts these into impulses and sends these through electrodes into the brain.

A cochlear implant has some very complex parts as it has a microphone, speech processor, transmitter, receiver, stimulator and many tiny electrodes. The costs to getting one of these implants are off the roof and the only way to get one is in a developed country. The success of the operation lies in a lot of factors such as a person?s hearing history, cause of hearing loss, amount of residual hearing, health status and commitment to rehabilitation or post implant therapy.

Doctor's and patients are also looking forward to gene therapy. A person with damaged cochlea cells, may simply opt to have new cochlea cells grown from scratch. Gene therapy is still a new science and no definite plans are present yet.

The best thing to do with hearing loss is to avoid it in the first place, but if all else fails these hearing treatments may be the answer to your questions. A specialist trained in the various aspecs of hearing treatment is the only way to know which hearing treatment should be used. Don't waste another moment before you have your hearing checked.
