Unique Tips for Summer Traveling

By: Eileen Cantor

Long drives for road trips in the summer months should be relaxing and barrels of fun. Here are tips for travel that you might have overlooked.

Do not pull out of the garage if the tires have not been switched from winter to summer ones. Check tire pressure before departing as a pound of it is generally lost on a monthly basis. Correct tire inflation is a must if tread separation and blowouts are to be avoided since ideal contact between road and tires is maintained.

Take care of any fluid situations. Drive out only when you have had the car oil changed. Check your owner manual for the car as the manufacturer oil suggestions are included there. Take a look under the hood and inside the radiator to see about the antifreeze and coolant mix. Coolant to water ratios need to stay at the 50 to 50 level for easy temperature regulation whether it is hot or cold outside.

Survey the other sections of the car. Hoses and belts need to be checked by a reliable auto mechanic. Although wiper blades seldom survive past one year some still work so just check if yours are still efficiently. Lastly a car battery older than three years needs to be brought to a certified car repair facility for testing.

Always have emergency kits handy in your cars. In case you find yourself having to change a tire be sure to take along a spare mat for covering the clothes to keep them clean and put all emergency items like jumper cables and first aid kits plus a flashlight in a secure section of the trunk. Always pack additional supplies from extra washer fluid to jugs of water to basic repair tools like screwdrivers or pliers to paper towels and gloves to clothing.

Most road trip takers go overboard when it comes to getting ready for traveling. There is no need to bring a whole lot so just pack the basics. Put the shampoo back in the shower you have another one waiting where you are going. Do you really need to bring eight pairs of shorts when you will have access to a washer/dryer?

Once you have decided what to bring, do not pack items so high that they completely block your outward vision. If using a pickup truck for heavy items put the ones with the most weight in the center so unloading is less complicated as for the rest of the items be sure to even them out in the car.

A great deal of accidents happen because people nod off while driving. Go to bed early so you are ready for the hours of driving the next day. While coffee perks you right up the caffeine buzz is just temporary and you soon find yourself in a lulled state. Get some rest when you can by switching drivers if possible and stopping repeatedly. Expressway fatigue risks are actually reduced thanks to tiny bladders since they force people to stop frequently and use the bathroom.

Just think you are exhausted and still driving after hours of even more driving and the kids are not exactly at their best behavior in the back of the car so you finally lose it and road rage takes place. Exercise patience it will be worth it. No one likes a road hog so do not be one and just let that speeder pass you plus do not tailgate. The roads would be a lot safer if people all just learned to get along. Consider these travel tips and your road trip in the summer is bound to be a success.
