Vast Differences Seen Between these New Doctors and Their Predecessors

By: StevenT George

Idealistic young men and women have always found an attraction with the medical profession. However, more than ever, America's medical schools have brought in a new generation of students who, in these past few years, have spurned the physical profits of working in the medical field.

For instance, one 28-year-old physician refused $30,000.00 + from insurance and drug corporations, medical schools and private institutions. While still in medical school, this young man started a group which he still works for making $12,000. per year. These doctors are instead working to improve the quality of medical care available to patients in communities all across America.

He is moving away from the traditions that surround the medical profession. The institute was founded with government funds four years ago with the mission of studying the medical, educational, dental and legal requirements of specific communities. He has issued a statement, saying that you can't just take the health care industry's issues into consideration; people must consider the needs of entire communities. Students who wish to be pioneers are restricted by the limited number of opportunities within the medical system.

Clearly, the health care system in this country is in bad shape. Medical schools are slowly beginning to see this need but they need to be spurred to action. The people who can force the medical programs to change are the medical students themselves. Thanks to their persistence, the majority of medical programs in the United States have begun to include community medicine classes as a part of their degree requirements. Presently, just about all medical students recognize the issues and desire to be part of the solution.

There has been a swell of increased social awareness, passion for medicine, concern for unfairness, and compassion among medical students, according to the dean of a top U.S. medical school. He said he has not seen this from his own or other generations, so much so, that they often fail to find the humor in given situations. Medical students desiring to implement real change will also work harder to realize their goals and see real change. Today's medical student has unique values, goals, and lives a unique lifestyle. And he doesn't want to be trapped by the social conventions of his predecessors.

Prior generations of doctors were motivated by a desire for social success. They were members of a fun-loving, pompous society, concerned with a more materialistic, highly structured lifestyle which offered comfort, security and success. If you think like the former generation of doctor, you may have difficulty understanding the perspective of modern medical students.

The era of community medicine, where students learn to care for the whole being and that medical care is accessible to all regardless of financial situation, has begun. One associate professor who supports and helps lead these reform efforts points out that while billions of dollars are spent on medical care, people are actually not any happier now than they have ever been. He also claims that without change, this trend will continue. Not only have improvements not been realized, but in the absence of changes, conditions in the health care industry are likely to deteriorate.

An organization has been created to encourage and help medical students to dedicate their skills to areas of public health, environmental health and preventive medicine. This association subsidizes medical endeavors that are pushed by the community all across America. It spends a lot of its time trying to get medical programs to have students participate in some of these projects.

One of the organization's student program directors said that the majority of the medical students who participated in various projects said they were seriously interested in coming back to the areas to practice medicine. Reaching out to the communities that they are serving, you will find the med schools and hospitals wanting to recruit minority men and women to train for medical careers, in addition to the setting up of clinic and other community projects.
