By: Alan Boykrs

Every year a growing number of people see Canada as a prime location for winter tours. The place is packed with scenic spots and events like rocking carnivals and premium sports complexes and skiing so there is always something for everyone.

As an offshoot of people recognizing the potential of Canada as a winter vacation spot more package tours to the place are now offered. Available package options are combination and ski or city as well as special events. Amazing skiing adventures can be had on Canadian slopes. Skiers are well acquainted with such names as Mont Tremblant or Banff and Jasper. The food and skiing are excellent regardless whether you ride a helicopter to the British Columbian or Alberta mountains or pick the Laurentians or Quebec.

Although a Canadian winter is best for skiing the adventure does not stop there. Ice hockey is the most popular sport in the country, and there are professional teams in most of Canada's larger cities, including Montreal's official hockey team. Ice rinks can be found both indoors and outdoors and there is even one in Ottawa stretching four miles that is recognized as the longest rink worldwide.

Quebec is where the first snowmobile was created and while other countries now use it Canada is where it enjoys the most popularity. Visible marked trails are provided for snow machines and add to that the snowmobile clubs to make weekend excursions totally fun. Snowshoeing is an easy and popular winter sport special. Several locations are opening snowshoeing trails.

A couple of feet of ice on rivers and lakes in Canada do not faze fishermen from pursuing their fave sporting activity. A hole in the center of the ice and a temporary shelter and all is ready for fishing. Fishermen are able to catch thousands of tomcods thanks to colorful shanties they use off the village of La Perade in Quebec.

Wintertime fishing activities are available in several Canadian lakes particularly in Ontario and most of them even provide the gear already. Another well loved pursuit is tobogganing. Quite a number of places have the toboggans featuring manufactured chutes to take some of the speed off the ride. From the visual delights to the heart pounding drop down the sides of a cliff the huge slide ride in Quebec City is one that is truly unforgettable.

There are ski resort places that hold off slopes for exclusive toboggan events. The winter months herald carnivals too as ice castles are made together with snowshoe and dog races while food and drink keep coming. The hundred or so winter carnivals in Canada range from the simple to the extreme but they all offer loads of excitement.

Of particular interest are the international competitions that have athletes flying in from all over. Dog sled racing, along with classical snowshoes, is paraded for the public through these festivals. Shopping for one of a kind crafts and antiques in far off boutiques continues regardless of the season.

Artwork by Indians and Eskimos specifically soap rock carvings are quite popular souvenir items. Explore the culture scene by listening to the symphony of the capital in one of its more than 10 concerts or watch the ballet company perform. A musical group from Vancouver or the opera plus Montreal theaters available in French as well as English are a visual and auditory delight to behold.

The treasure packed museums of Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Saint John and elsewhere are open all year. Inside the vibrant cities of Canada can be found nightspots that include tiny discos along with entertainment from hotels and exclusive nightclubs.

Find a brief respite from the harsh snow or heavy rain in the underground city of Montreal. Miles of tunnels connect hotels, shops, restaurants, theaters and railways stations with office complexes, apartment towers and the quietest subway in the world, Le Metro. Toronto along with Winnipeg are examples of cities considering the subterranean development concept. Just a stroll on brilliant crackling snow is a delight for many vacationers.

Aside from Saskatchewan steaks tourists can have their fill of French cuisine of Quebec and food items from British Columbia during their stay. All of this plus much more make Canada a great place to visit.
