By: Sheri Gnor

While purchasing a wrist watch we often come to know about different movement of the watches and most of us seemed to be confused about this factor. But it is a simple factor of the watch-making process that anyone can come to understand.

The movement is a vital aspect of watch making, as it denotes the interior mechanism of a wrist watch that drives and maintains the watch engine for its time keeping functions. In general there are three types of watch movements found in watches; one is quartz, then mechanical and the third option is automatic movement.

One of the most important parts of a watch’s mechanical movement is the main spring of the watch, which unwinds slowly, and releases the required energy for moving the gears, which supply the desired power of the timekeeping function of the watch. Mechanical watches genuinely reflect the skill and talent of the watchmaker and the merit of the watches can be assessed by its reliable output. Most of the mechanical watches are unique and skillful combination of gears and springs; it has been often found that world’s most famous wrist watches run on mechanical movements. Th wrist watches with mechanical movement are excellent from the point of durability and long sustenance.

An automatic movement is advancement on mechanical movement because the basic of automatic movement runs on mechanical movement driven by self-winding design. An automatic watch runs on the energy produced by the motion for winding the spring. The movement is similar to a rotor, which spins when the watch is in motion as the user moves his arm. Automatic watches provide all the basic advantages of mechanical watches, however, the user enjoys an extra advantage that he/she does not need to wind the watch manually. If the watch is used at regular basis, it maintains its power reserve automatically.

Quartz movement is an extremely reliable, precise and cost effective movement type with reliable and consistent output. This movement is powered by a battery source and it is called quartz movement because it works with coordination with a quartz crystal. However, in general, the battery is to be changed in every one year time gap.

There are some quartz movements in watches which run on solar-powered rechargeable batteries and some quartz movements feature a particular kinetic system similar to automatic watches. Although watches running on quartz movement hardly demand any regular maintenance, for better accuracy of output once in a year these quartz watches are to be checked and adjusted in authorized workshops. The same goes for mechanical watches, automatic watches and replica watches.
