Ways on how deaf students learn to communicate

By: Manyui Lotsfd

Around 14 million Americans today suffer from hearing loss to a certain degree, and this interferes whenever they communicate with other people. The week of Sept 21-28 has been designated Deaf Awareness Week and the counselor for the East Harris County coop for the deaf will be helping to make the week a success. Hearing impaired kids in that area are lucky to be attended by this dedicated counselor. While she lives to serve, no one knows that she also achieved so much, such as a degree in teaching both the hearing impaired and hearing children, and a master's degree in counseling that is certified as a special education degree.

She shares that the coop is established to give quality education to those aged 0 to 21, suffering from hearing impairment. Another lady overlooks the coop which is a team composed of nothing but the best when it comes to speech pathology, counseling and advising, reading specialization, interpreting and diagnosing. As one team, we achieve things, she shares.

Other teachers, even those from different schools play important roles too, she shares. They have been trained to educate children with hearing disorders and they also have aides to make things easier. These children who are deaf but with various degrees of hearing impairment must grab this program as it can truly give them an edge. Right after assessing the individual needs of her students, she gets into the meat of things guided by the principle of total communication and this involves speech reading, auditory training, skimming, speech, pantomime, guess work, sign language, spelling by way of the fingers, gestures, and even body language exercises.

Dealing closely with the family of the hearing impaired kids is a very important facet of the program. Parents must realize the value of proper communication with their children along with being able to grasp deafness. Home use programs on speech and language as well as sign language lessons for the parents are part of this program. The center envisioned Deaf Awareness Week to bring out the confidence of the deaf children.

Only if they choose to see it as a handicap will it then be one. See them as children first and foremost, and only consider their hearing impairment as a small matter in their lives. She shares that while it can be difficult, she hopes to change things.

Running through devices that aid the hearing impaired is also part of her agenda. They shall tackle hearing aid gadgets, caring for these as well as other alternative tools that the deaf can use to hear. The dear can now hear, thanks to sign language.

Sign language is truly magnificent. She reveals how she motivates the children by saying that even when their mouths are full but they can manage to communicate, then they are at an edge. In order to encourage better communication skills among the deaf, flashing lights for TV sets and fire alarms as well as closed caption TV sets are suggested.

Throughout the week known as Deaf Awareness, the local municipal library shows their support via a showcase of special books and bulletin boards available only in that week. The people working in the library has a deaf co worker and this enabled them to value the Deaf Awareness Week. She could no longer hear after she was diagnosed to have spinal meningitis.

She said that while she was in Washington state, she got spinal meningitis which left her totally deaf. I've lived thirty long years being able to hear well now it's suddenly gone. She shares that she had no idea how she would live her life not being able to hear and this made her so scared.
