Wedding Gift Ideas

By: Norman Kirby

Weddings are fun, beautiful, memorable, and romantic. They symbolize the union of two hearts. Being invited to one is really exciting; but what about the wedding gifts? It is a tradition for guests to give the newly weds something to celebrate the occasion. So, what can you give? Most of the guests will surely refer to the registry and all the good gifts on it will be taken already. Besides, most registry gifts are quite impersonal. They may be practical but they do not really create an impact. How can an over toaster or a set of glass dinnerware represent your personal relationship with the bride or the groom? Wedding gifts like these cannot express your true feelings about the wedding.

Something handmade is good to give. This will show that you really care and that you gave time and effort in making the gift. A gift basket, for instance, is ideal. You can either create the basket yourself or buy a ready-made basket from the store. You may decorate it with ribbons and flowers. Add some wine, cookies, CD's, chocolates, and books. A handmade picture frame is another cool gift. Making one is easy and the materials are not hard to find. You may use cardboard, wood, or metal. Dried flowers, confetti, and fabric can be glued as ornaments. It will also be better if you can include a photo of the couple. If you are good with art and crafts, you may also make a painting for the newly weds or cross-stitch their portrait. Non-material wedding gifts are great, as well. Treat the couple to something you know they have always wanted but never got a chance to experience. A trip to the spa, for example, will surely enable them to relax and detoxify. Massage and sauna baths will help them get rid of their stress. Book them in an expensive hotel room for their honeymoon. Just make sure that they or their other friends have not made any other reservation yet. Also, give this gift early so they may be able to include it in their plans. You may also give them a gift certificate for a trendy restaurant, a salon, or a beach resort. Plane ticket upgrades also make wonderful wedding gifts. Upgrade their tickets to first-class so they can enjoy their flight.

If all else fail, or if you did not have the chance to produce any of the above suggestions for wedding gifts, you can always give money. True, giving money as a gift may seem uncreative and impersonal; but it is still a good choice. In fact, most young couples do not have much savings. So, you may help them invest in a house, a car, or appliances by giving them money. Nonetheless, if you still find giving money unappealing, try combining the money with something else. Insert a check in a book or a photo album. You can also put some cash in an envelope and give it with a card. You may also give several small wedding gifts with the money.
