What You Need to Know About Wedding Gift Etiquette

By: Norman Kirby

The wedding is perhaps the most important event in a woman's life. It is the day that nearly every girl dreams of. There is dancing, eating, drinking wine, giving a wedding gift, and merry-making. It is also the day when to different people unite and become one in the eyes of God. However, a wedding also calls for proper etiquette. As a guest, you cannot just act the way you want on a wedding. You have to think about your words and actions. You also have to give an appropriate wedding gift. One popular wedding gift is a gift certificate or a cash gift. Note that the cash gift may also be presented as a check. Anyway, you can treat the married couple to their favorite resort or restaurant. You can also give them separate certificates. A trip to the spa or salon will definitely delight the bride while a certificate for a massage or a gym membership will be great for the groom.

Nonetheless, you must always keep in mind that proper timing is also an important factor to consider. For instance, if you plan to treat the couple on their honeymoon by booking them in a lavish hotel or beach resort, give your wedding gift early. Tell them about it so they will be able to include that in their honeymoon plans. On the other hand, if you plan to give a material wedding gift, make sure that you bring it on the wedding day itself. You can personally give it to the bride and the groom during the reception or you can leave it on their wedding gift section. If you were not able to produce a gift on that special day, make sure that you send one within three months. However, it will be better if you can send your gift as soon as the couple comes back from their honeymoon trip. Then again, if two months have already passed since the wedding date and there is still no acknowledgment or even a "thank you" card from the married couple, you may call them and ask if they have indeed received your gift. Do not worry about being rude because this practice is just fine according to the wedding gift etiquette.

In addition, even if the wedding invitation you received says no gifts are needed, it will still be better if you can bring a wedding gift. Something personalized, nifty, and useful is your best option. Consider giving the bride and the groom something you know they will need, but do not forget to add a personal touch. You can buy them kitchen appliances, bathroom essentials, or personal items. A registry will also be a big help if you do not have any idea on what to give. Brides and grooms usually register with their local department store so their guests will be guided on what to give as presents. Nevertheless, if you still do not know what to give, consider giving money instead. Most newly weds are saving up for their own house, and you can give them a hand by giving money as a wedding gift.
