What is a CD-R and who invented it?

By: ben rivaux

The CD-R named CD Write-Once (WO) in 1988, specification was first published by Sony and Philips. The media also was named at that time Write-Once (WO) but then later on changed to the CD-R as we all know it.

Media or blanks
CD-R media are the disks that are used to record
digital information, this process of recording is done by using a special recorder and
premastering software with a computer. These discs
are made of a polycarbonate substrate, a metalized reflective layer , a layer of
organic dye, and a coating of lacquer for protection.

Injection Molding
This is a manufacturing method where the molten
material is forced into a mold, this is normally done under
high pressure, then after a while is cooled so that the material
will take on the shape of a mirror image in the
mold.

Organic dye
The data layer of CD-R(Or recordable Disk) media is made from a dye
that is melted during the recording process .
The area where the Dye has been melted, becomes refractive or opaque, scattering the reading laser so that
it isn't reflected back into the reading sensors.

Data layer
With CD-R media, this is the organic dye that is
squizzed or sandwiched between the polycarbonate substrate and
the metalized reflective layer of the media. No data will be found on a CD-R disk until it's first burning process.

Reflective layer
This is the metal layer that sits on top of the
dye, this layer finally reflects the laser beam back to the
reading assembly. This is normally 24k gold in
CD-R disks, but sometime it can also be made of silver.
