Why Are Trivia Quizzes Perennially Popular?

By: Mike Davis

Trivia quizzes are one of the most popular types of quizzes - just look at the continuing success of TV quiz shows such as Jeopardy. Visit any bookshop and you'll find a variety of trivia books on a wide range of pop culture topics, ranging from the newest blockbuster movie to the works of the hottest bestselling author. And remember the Trivial Pursuit craze, when everybody seemed to be playing the game? Many video game arcades also feature a trivia game machine, where you take a short quiz and are awarded redeemable tickets or tokens based on the number of questions you answered correctly.
But the most popular source for trivia quizzes are quiz sites where you can find a broad assortment of interactive quizzes that you can take online without the bother of having to get a paper and pencil to record your answers. And you can get your score immediately without having to look it up. Many online quizzes also feature unique digital content such as java animation or even videos, to enhance the quiz-taking experience. These online quizzes are usually of the multiple choice variety although there are some that actually require you to type in the answer.
Trivia quizzes are also popular ways to liven up get-togethers with friends . Many puzzle-loving people still hold Trivial Pursuit evenings as the manufacturer of the board game continues to issue updated editions with new questions as well as new games based on popular pop culture subjects, such as The Lord of the Rings or Star Trek. Or they can print out quizzes from quiz sites and then compete to see who can get the most right answers or complete the quiz in the shortest time. If you're creative enough, you can even make your own quizzes.
The most difficult thing about creating trivia quizzes is picking the questions. You don't want to create questions that are too hard or have answers that are too esoteric , even if you're providing multiple choice answers to choose from. On the other hand, you don't want to make quizzes that are too easy, since they would pose no challenge and thus, would be no fun to finish. Another challenge is how to phrase the question appropriately once you've found a piece of trivia that you want to turn into a quiz question. One suggestion for creating your own quiz: mix questions from a pre-existing quiz with questions that you have made up on your own to create something new.
There are many reasons why people still love trivia quizzes despite their similarity to the tests we used to hate taking when we were in school. One is the satisfaction of testing your knowledge against the quiz and discovering that you know and remember more than you think you do. Another is the joy of learning some new and interesting piece of information from the quiz, even if it seems useless or to have no useful application. But the bottom line is that these quizzes are simply fun to take and so, they will continue to be consistently popular.
