Why We Write

By: Trace Livengood

Everyone requires an outlet. Im not merely talking about escaping all the obvious stressors and hassles that afflict the average person in the western world in our day. For some people contemplation itself is the utmost adversary. A lot of those individuals are either miserable most of the time or move toward to a inventive (or damaging) outlet to release the force that builds internally on a daily basis from too much speculation.
If you havent guessed yet, my particular discharge mechanism dwells in the written word. Heres what I do.
1. Breathe life into a character. Be able to empathize with them and build up an knowledge of what makes them tick. What do they care about? What are their fears? What do they get pleasure from in their imaginary life?
2. Torture them. Enormously destroy them physically and emotionally. Be innovative in the torments that you oblige your character to bear. Watch them endure.
3. Become conscious that what youre doing to your character is wrong. Youll begin to develop a natural sympathy for your creation and want to bring happiness back into their made up life.
4. Feel absolved.
Thats correct. I am a self confessed ficto-sadist. In real life I consider about individuals, and wish no damage or affliction on anyone. As the only God and emperor of my imaginary universe I revel in the satisfaction of bringing the absolute worst agony into the fake lives of my fake creations. When Im through Im often bleary eyed and jittery from all the coffee, but feel emptied of all the disorder in my thoughts. If it worked for Kurt Vonnegut and his ever-enduring alter ego Kilgore Trout its more than good enough for a lowly newbie such as myself.
