Why You Should Install a Propane Water Heater

By: Mike Davis

Did you know that your water heater is responsible for twenty percent of your total household energy bill? That's why you should pay attention to what water heater you have and how well it's working. It's a confusing area with lots of phrases like natural gas water heater, propane tankless water heater, propane hot water heater and water heater tank, being thrown around. In this article we are going to lay it out in plain language so that when you go to Home Depot, or Ace Hardware, you know what you are talking about.

But first, a little reality check. I suggest to you that only plumbing beats your water heater in terms of importance in your house hold. Think about it, would you want to take cold showers every day? Or would you want to wash dishes in cold water? Most people prefer hot or warm water to cold, when given a choice.

There are two kinds of water heater. You have the tank type that is usually fifty gallons of water that are always hot. The heater keeps the water hot at all times so it is ready when you need it. Then we have the tankless water heater. Tankless does not keep a large amount of water heated all the time.

A propane heater will heat a tank full of fifty gallons of water in half the time it takes an electric heater to do the job. Propane is not as expensive and easier on the planet. It's easier on the planet by way of the fact that if we use less electric and more propane, we will need to build fewer electric power plants.

Another way to cost and the planet at the same time is to take shorter showers. The difference between a ten minute shower and a twenty minute shower is huge from an energy consumption standpoint, not to mention all that water. So, in addition to going to propane, you can take shorter showers to save money.

Here is another tip. Most hot water heaters ship from the factory pre set at 140 degrees. You can adjust the temperature to 120 degrees and that will result in large savings. Yes, your hot water won't be quite as warm, but it will still get plenty hot. Also, a slightly cooler shower will keep folks from taking showers that are quite as long. This will save you money over time.

In summary, propane is good because it saves energy and money. It is also easier on the planet. There are things you can do like taking shorter showers and turning the temperature down, to save additional money. All of this is worth doing because your water heater is the largest energy related cost you have. If you want to manage house hold expenses, there is no smarter place to start than with your water heater.
