Why is There a Great Escape Happening in Dental Offices?

By: Amanda Palmer

Sedating patients through pills is not really a new practice in dentistry, but it is more popular in some areas compared to others. At a local dentist office, the dentist says this has been part of his management for several years now. It is a great benefit to eliminate pain as procedures such as pulling wisdom teeth, doing root canals, and performing crowns are carried out to the patient.

Patients take in the sedatives by mouth that provide them relaxation and brings them to a level of sleep where they continue to be able to respond. The same dose and type of medication is not given to all the patients. The apprehension level as well as the anxiousness dictates the choice to make. Popping one pill may have adequate results for a handful of patients, but other patients need to take more than that.

Oral conscious sedation has never brought any headache for this dentist. Properly trained people will not be worried of any safety hazards. It takes 35 pills for someone to experience the hazards of using this medication. The only time this procedure becomes contraindicated to you is if you are pregnant or if you are a nursing mom.

Nearly 145 million Americans avoid going to the dentist out of fear. Her fear started from a dental procedure back in her teenage years, says a lady. She is not certain of the procedure, but she is definitely sure of the intense pain she felt.

There remain patients who opt to undergo dental works not because of fear. Painless conduction of lengthy and complicated procedures is the basic purpose of sedation in dentistry. A minority of the patient's population can keep up with the long and terrible procedures devoid of sedatives.

There was, however, a patient who said she was not terrified at all of the dentist. She meets her dentist every six months for regular checkup and a cleaning, but she admits having tried sedatives on three occasions for crowns. She can still follow instructions like head turning and mouth widening even if she was asleep during the procedure. The single downside perhaps is that patients could not be able to drive themselves home and they will need someone to pick them up from the dentist's office.

If you ask this dentist several years ago, he would not show any interest for sedation dentistry. It was his intention to learn and educate others that pushed him to attend a course tackling the said procedure. Three people immediately volunteered as he reached his office and that shifted him right away.

It takes a whole team to be involved with a single dental procedure. The dental team should be able to manage the clients once they have been sedated. Not only will anxiety and fear be cancelled for one dental treatment with sedatives, it can actually cancel the cycle of fear altogether. Some patients step in the clinic and require sedation for any type of procedure, from long procedures down to the simple cleanings. By doing this, dental problems waiting to happen, that they have been ignoring for a long time, may be avoided.
