Winter Pests that Invade Your Home

By: Dovid Davis

Hi, I'm Boruch Fishman and welcome to another episode of Close Up. Today, I will be talking with you that I learned recently from Dovid Davis, a Baltimore pest control expert and Director of A #1 Pest Control, a Baltimore pest control company about pests that invade the home in winter.

Most householders, who have been battling witha variety of insect pests all summer, breathe a sigh of contentment when the colder temperatures comes in. As any pest exterminator can attest to, there are not as many calls for insect pest problems in the colder months.

Cockroaches, for example, mostly die out. The rare winter cockroach is easily gotten rid of. Dueto the warm temperature found in the kitchen and around machines, such as computers, the roaches tend to come out in the open where they are easytargets. Antsfrequentlycome into the home when the weather starts to turn cold in the fall. However, by winter most ants are gone and any ant hills, which they had tried to build in the kitchen or elsewhere in the home will be mostly empty.

Termites are another insect that likes to breed in the spring and fall and are not usually noticed in the winter. And the same is true of stinging insect pests and most other invading bugs.
But, according to Dovid Davis there are several types of pests which are often found in the winter. These pests include warm blooded mammals such as raccoons and squirrels.

When the weather turns cold, these warm blooded mammals are on the lookout for weather friendly living quarters. A nice snug household is just what these pests want.. Mice, for example will look for any means of ingress and then try to live behind appliances or in holes which they find in the walls near the kitchen. Nesting places, such as these, provide, a great vantage point from which they can venture out at night searching for available food or or unpackaged or even packaged provender stored in the kitchen.
Squirrels and Raccoons, on the other hand, prefer the attic, a crawl space or any out of the way corner in the garage or storage hut. To get to these sought after winter get away lodgings the wild animals might gnarl a hole in the roof or wall or else seek an already existent hole as a means of ingress. They will come and go for a while, filling up their poached home with nuts and othertypes of nourishment that will help them make it through the winter. And, if not caught, these animal invaders will live and breed in their winter home, unbeknown to their host.

According to Dovid Davis, the first sign that cold weather pests are in the home are frequently sounds in the wall, (usually for rodents), and sounds in the attic, (for squirrels and raccoons). Other indications of mice invasion include mice excrement, small circular gnarl holes in food packages, and the general smelly stench that hangs around places where mice live.
If you think that a winter pest has invaded your house you should call an exterminator right away. The pest specialist will help you determine if there are pests in your house and if so he will happy to help you get rid of them.

Well folks, that's it for another episode of Close Up, I'm Boruch Fishman, have a great day!
