Working Around the Dental Research Budget

By: Randy Aguilar

Devising a way to congregate with potential private investors served the purpose of generating the interest of these companies and possible influencing them to invest in university research programs. There was one state that conducted an academic entrepreneurship seminar for biotechnics. This is a group that state law has created for the purpose of technological advancement. Designated centers are those which qualified after their applications were reviewed.

About a million from the state funds go to research and development but any center that qualifies for a grant needs to find another source from the private sector to give them the same amount of money. Some of the subjects presented in a conference teaming up with a venture capital organization include dentistry, surgery, and drugs. Quite a number of companies took part in the conference and of the 50 represented corporations the majority included pharmaceutical and biotechnical companies as well as venture organizations. Companies were given significant information pertaining to the kind of dental research available at the university including specific targets for each program.

He was skeptical of the conference idea at first, but found that all the participants took the exchange of ideas more seriously than he had expected. Invitations were sent to companies whom they thought would not budge to buy the dental products but these companies did the opposite. It turned out to be such a great idea that another conference is in the works. To capitalize on a conference like this one some investments need to be made afterwards. Thanks to the idea they now carry numerous research contracts under their belt.

An example of the benefits from successful dental research is the development of the periotron for gingivitis and periodontal problems where the tool can serve to diagnose and cure diseases. They made it possible for different tools to emerge and some more of these developments include pH electrodes for measuring plaque, miniaturized oxygen for measuring oxygen in periodontal pockets, and ultraviolet cameras for analyzing plaque. Part of the studies showed how saliva can be a highly reliable source of information. The breath only attracts a minute amount of alcohol compared to saliva. Especially for diabetics the crevicular fluid can give pertinent glucose readings.

When a number of people begin experiencing a series of lingering conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure the prolonged exposure can cause difficulties with treatment. Most of the time the saliva flow of people undergoing treatment for different ailments are affected as they take in the medication prescribed by their physicians. A person over 55 years of age encounters the possibility of dry mouth syndrome. They are more prone to caries, denture problems, and malodor.

In dentistry both the hard and soft tissues are significant but more diagnostic tools are needed so that it could be possible to provide ample treatment for the soft tissue. A good checkup traditionally means no cavities. Problems that arise in the gingiva and periodontia can cause much alarm with or without a cavity problem and this is the new idea that the dental field wants patients to have.

Time shared during a simple check up can easily form a bond between both sides. The industry has learned that some things take a very long time, given the Food and Drug Administration and Federal Commission requirements and the academic world.

It is possible for someone to take advantage of another when money is the case. It is possible to obtain research funding from the government but take into consideration that the government has limited power over the money especially because it no longer increases as fast as it used to. Other economic problems can get in the way like inflation for example and there is also the aging of equipment. There are also more researchers in competition for the research dollar. It's like dentistry, where there was a large output of dental graduates at a time when the number of cavities dropped.
