Worrying Over Hearing Impediments in Children

For those in the local speech and hearing clinic, Monday morning was unusually busy. To see if the children had any speech or hearing problems, twenty five of them received assessments from speech clinicians and hearing technicians. For 537 preschool children, a junior league volunteer technician and a staff speech pathologist were able to conduct assessments in their particular areas. Recommendations were given to 61 children for hearing and 86 for speech reexaminations.

Conducting assessments in the private preschools generated findings which allowed the children to know if they had normal hearing and speech abilities or if they should consider getting reexamined. As an effort to help people prevent handicaps later on in life, the head of the local hearing and speech facility says that it is important for them to help identify these hearing and speech problems at an earlier time. There are times when early detection is the only key to alleviating lifelong complications from certain conditions, and this is what they are concerned with as they are not implying in any way that preschoolers should possess perfect language and speech skills but should have been able to achieve certain milestones by now.

While they are still very young, the children can start with the treatments they need considering the number of severe problems discovered in the conducted examinations. Mentioned by a volunteer, some of the parents of the children were worrywarts about the speech and hearing of their kids. A project like this has its rewards in the form of being able to inform a parent that a child is free from problems.

From one volunteer to another, the techniques needed for hearing examinations were shared and this volunteer program resulted from it. The next thing these two ladies did was call up the preschools that were in their area and arrange for these institutions to have screening dates. Speech and language usage was assessed for all of the children who were selected by the teachers after everyone received tests for hearing. They have a clinic located in a certain area that will accommodate those who were unable to get screened or did not pass the given tests and the scheduling was coordinated with their parents.

From how they react to sound stimuli, to their level of vocabulary and sentence structures, including their use of speech, each child was assessed based on the certain milestones that should have already been reached at their age level and the results determined what actions are necessary. Referrals were made for some of the children while some parents were simply taught how to manage at home. Cases may have need advised for more screenings but some were also advised to get necessary treatment.

About two to three hours is the time necessary for the completion of the comprehensive assessment offered by the local speech and hearing clinic for children who may be susceptible to speech and hearing problems. For those who may need to go for treatment, it is possible to avail of a home program, individual or grouped weekly sessions, and a preschooler daily intensive program.

Any option will move towards the benefit of a child especially when he is still at this stage in life not only because of its preventive capabilities but also because of its therapeutic nature. Other than having six preschool classes that are yet to be screened there are also parents who are waiting for the finalized dates for the new batch of rescreening where they need to make appointments.
